My Entrecard Spot Is Way Too Expensive

Over the weekend the price of my Entrecard ad spot skyrocketed to 100 credits a day. I took a screenshot of my ad in the top five spots on the Web Development category for historical purposes.

Entrecard - Top 5 in Web Development

Two Steps for High Priced Glory

Getting more card drops to raise my price was simple. I had two ads running on high profile sites Friday night through Saturday: John Chow and Affiliate Confession. Those two ads accounted for almost 150 card drops alone over the weekend. As a brief aside, I actually got more traffic from Affiliate Confession than John Chow which was interesting.

The other step was to make sure my Entrecard spot was as high above the fold as possible without making things obnoxious.

So what’s the problem?

My ad is clearly overpriced for it’s traffic and popularity. At 100 credits a day I’m right up there with high quality sites like DotSauce and Adii’s blog and that’s just not a fair comparison really. I know those sites are getting more visitors than this one is right now based on RSS subscribers alone.

The problem with this new high price, and you can see it in that screenshot I took, is that I’m getting few advertising requests because my blog is blatantly overvalued. The several requests I did get I rejected for not being related to my content so I’m partially to blame for the ad drought. Even though I’m being picky I’m still seeing far fewer requests since the jump from my old price of 45 credits a day to 100.

I wish Entrecard had a mechanism for setting your own ad price with the maximum being the value its system determines based on card drops. That way I could lower my price to something more reasonable and see more requests coming through.

  1. I think the Entrecard economy is improving so the advertising prices for each of our blogs should continue to rise, but I have seen some outrageous pricing for blogs that don’t get much traffic and don’t have very good spots for their banners. Let’s get those Entrecard banners above the fold everyone!

Thanks for the shoutout by the way.

  2. I think 100 credits is reasonable as your widget is above the scroll. Very valuable in my opinion.

Also I have stumbled your post and blog.

  4. Ah, I did wonder why you had skyrocketed up there, we used to close in value! And yeah good call on having your card above the scroll, mine is too! :)

Oh and nice post the other day about the link-a-dink, I plan to use it.

  5. I don’t think there is anything you can do about your card being priced hire. As long as you have many Entrecard Members visiting your site to drop their cards, the value of your card will keep on increasing.
That does not mean that people will not want to advertise on your site, remember, it is quite easy for anyone who is determined to get as much as 300credits a day by simply visiting 300 members site and dropping cards. But it is not easy getting to use same to advertise in the Popular Blogs such as John Chow’s blog. For days I have been checking for an opportunity to advertise even if it means using all my entrecard credits, but alas, the blog advert queue is perpetually full.
Maybe I should come and advertise on your blog! :-)

  6. […] I am jack’s design has an interesting post on the cost to advertise on his blog for Entrecarders (Did I just invent a new word?) and how he had ads running here on Affiliate Confession and John Chow the same day. Jack also points out that his Entrecard spot is way over valued and has seen a huge jump in the cost in points to advertise on his blog in the last few days. The most interesting part of the post however, is that his ad on Affiliate Confession attracted more visitors to his blog than did his ad on John Chow. […]

  7. I have had the most uneven luck buying spots. It seems like the better traffic I have is from small niche blogs that have established readers but don’t attract the business Entresians (That’s what I call us) who rush through big bookmarked lists and don’t chain click. They are the ones who are bumping up your value.

  9. My blog was up that high for a few days. I only started it in January, so it was way overpriced. Things start to level out after. I have to winder why they don’t take the average for more than just 5 days. It would make the prices fluctuate less.

  10. […] If you are tired of the over priced cost of advertising on popular blogs over at Entrecard, you might be interested in my new discovery. If you paid 400+ Entrecard credits to advertise on popular blogs and receive a few visit, then it’s certainly not worth it. I have read posts from disgruntled Entrecard users who complain about the unreasonable advertising cost of some blogs yet drive few traffic. Some Entrecard users with expensive advertisement cost even complain about their overpriced advertising cost. […]
